Specialty Camps Accelerator

The Foundation for Jewish Camp (FJC) is pleased to announce the Specialty Camps Accelerator II, made possible by the AVI CHAI Foundation.  Building on the success of the model of the Specialty Camps Accelerator I, the second cycle of this innovative program will open up to 8 new nonprofit Jewish overnight camps dedicated to a specific skill or area of interest while introducing and integrating Jewish culture.  Each camp will have the potential capacity of 400 campers each per summer.

The Accelerator will fast-track the creation of new camps, encouraging and leveraging significant local investment with FJC’s well-honed consulting services. FJC will offer support to a select cohort of individuals, organizations or existing camp professionals as they plan and implement their vision for new models in Jewish resident specialty camp to launch in summer 2018 through their second summer of camp operation in 2019.

The program will begin with an RFP process in September 2015. FJC leadership will spend the 2015 summer meeting with prospective partners who may be interested in starting a specialty camp. The goal is to bring to life innovative ideas in underserved areas that incorporate experiential Jewish learning along with excellence in programming. Specific emphasis will be placed on those with greatest fundraising capacity. The grant underwrites the Accelerator services, startup capital and deficit funding for each camp needs to be raised by the applicant through local or individual resources.

The RFP process for Specialty Camp Accelerator II will open in September 2015.

Specialty Camp Incubator

The camps selected for the second Specialty Camps Incubator are:

CAMP INC. provides campers with a business and entrepreneurial summer camp experience rooted in Jewish values. Campers will learn how to build a company in an industry of their choice and gain the skills necessary to become innovators and social leaders in business, philanthropy, and the Jewish community. Israel education will be embedded in the program as campers learn about Israel through the lens of their entrepreneurial sector. Campers will learn from high-level mentors, teachers, and business pioneers.  Camp Inc., under the direction of Josh Pierce, will be operated by the Boulder JCC.

CAMP ZEKE  Camp Zeke is the first Jewish camp where 7 to 17 year-olds celebrate healthy, active living. Campers can put on an apron and cook gourmet dishes with a professional chef. They can also choose from action-packed fitness electives, like running, yoga, strength training, dance, sailing, and krav maga. Camp Zeke also offers arts, music, sports, and nightly all-camp evening programs (like dances and talent shows).

JCC MACCABI SPORTS CAMP  is for campers who love sports and want to advance their skills in a fun and supportive camp environment.  During our two- or four-week sessions, campers focus on developing athletic skills and improving as teammates in the sport of their choice - baseball, basketball, soccer, or tennis. In addition to receiving high-level individualized instruction in sports, our campers gain life skills as well. Guided by Jewish values, we place a lot of emphasis on sportsmanship, ethics, and community. In fact, when you add the community and character building nature of team play, we find that sports and Jewish values go hand in hand.
URJ 6 POINTS SCI-TECH ACADEMY  will create an exciting camp environment that addresses the whole child. This innovative specialty camp will not only engage campers’ curiosity about the world through superior hands-on scientific and technological exploration, experimentation, and reflection; it will immerse them in a vibrant Jewish community filled with Jewish music, Shabbat experiences, and living connections to Israel. Jewish values, ethics and tradition will be woven together with the spirit and excitement of open scientific inquiry.  URJ 6 Points Science Academy, the 14th in the Union for Reform Judaism’s camp system, will be located in the Boston, MA area.

The Specialty Camp Incubator II is made possible by a grant of $8.6 million jointly funded by The Jim Joseph Foundation and the AVI CHAI Foundation.
